Viruses are any executable code that may be able to self replicate, display messages or images, destroy files, reformat your hard drive, cause other damage and/or degrade the performance of your computer.

 

Worms are an independent programs that replicate themselves, moving from machine to machine across a network. Usually for the purpose of taking down a network or website.

 

Trojans are any type of software that is installed on a computer or system that will open it to access without the owners

consent to remote users.

 

Mal-ware is any malicious software written to do damage to your operating system or programs. Used to damage or

disrupt a system or network. This may include Viruses or Trojans.

 

Ad-ware is advertising software. This software causes advertising to be displayed (usually annoying) while a program is running.

 

Dialers are programs that dial out through your modem to assist a Trojan, Spy-ware or Worm in doing its work. A dialer may dial out silently, turning off the modem speaker for stealth. Dialers are also responsible for calling toll numbers to force you to pay for phone calls to unscrupulous phone companies for calls your computer made by their software.

 

Hoaxes are just what they sound like.

 

Spy-ware is any software written to gain information from your computer and then to transmit it back to some other host

for tracking or exploitation without the users knowledge or consent.
